“I think my measurements are right, but what if they’re not?”
This is something I hear from Sacramento homeowners almost every day. Measuring windows seems simple, but small mistakes can lead to blinds or shades that don’t fit properly.
After helping thousands of local homeowners over the past 18 years, I’ve seen how proper measurements make all the difference between window treatments that look custom-made and ones that just don’t look right.
Why Accurate Measurements Matter
Getting your measurements right means:
- Your blinds will fit properly
- You won’t waste money on incorrect orders
- Your window treatments will look professional
- Your home will have better light control and privacy
- Your installation will go smoothly
Inside Mount vs. Outside Mount: What’s the Difference?
Before measuring, you need to decide if you want:
Inside Mount: Blinds or shades fit inside your window frame for a clean, built-in look.
Outside Mount: Blinds or shades mount on the wall or trim outside your window frame, making windows appear larger and blocking more light.
Tools You’ll Need
You don’t need fancy equipment:
- Metal measuring tape (cloth tapes can stretch and give inaccurate readings)
- Pencil
- Paper
- Step stool (if needed)
How to Measure for Inside Mount Blinds and Shades
Step 1: Measure the Width
- Measure the inside width of your window frame at three points: top, middle, and bottom
- Use the narrowest measurement as your ordering width
- Don’t make any deductions – the factory will adjust to ensure proper fit
Step 2: Measure the Height
- Measure the inside height from the top of the opening to the sill at three points: left, middle, and right
- Use the longest measurement as your ordering height
- For windows without a sill, measure to where you want the blind to end
Step 3: Measure Depth
- Measure the depth of your window frame (from front to back)
- Make sure it’s deep enough for the product you’re ordering
- Typical minimum depths:
- Blinds: 1½” to 2½”
- Cellular shades: 1″ to 1¼”
- Roman shades: 2″ to 3″
- Shutters: 2¼” to 3″
How to Measure for Outside Mount Blinds and Shades
Step 1: Measure the Width
- Decide how far you want the treatment to extend beyond the window
- For standard coverage, add 2″ to 3″ to each side (4″ to 6″ total)
- For maximum light blockage, extend further
Step 2: Measure the Height
- Decide where you want the top of the blind mounted
- Measure from this point to where you want the bottom to end
- Add 3″ to 4″ to the window height for better light control
Common Measurement Mistakes to Avoid
After helping countless Sacramento homeowners, here are the most common mistakes I see:
- Assuming all windows in your home are the same size (measure each one!)
- Measuring just one spot instead of three points
- Using the wrong mount type for your window style
- Not checking for obstructions like handles or cranks
- Confusing width and height when writing down measurements
- Using rough estimates instead of exact measurements
Special Situations
Sliding Glass Doors
- Outside mount is typically best
- Allow enough space for door handles
- Consider whether blinds/shades will hang below the door frame
Bay Windows
- Measure each section separately
- Consider using mounting brackets to avoid interference
Arched or Specialty Windows

With window treatments, there’s virtually no room for error. Even ⅛” can be the difference between a perfect fit and a frustrating installation. That’s why professional measurement is so valuable.
